แต่รู้ไหม… ต้นกำเนิดของพวงหรีดไม่ได้เกิดที่เมืองไทย

เดิมที พวงหรีดไม่ใช่สัญลักษณ์ที่อยู่คู่วัดไทยหรือแม้กระทั่งยังไม่มีคำไทยนี้ปรากฏมาก่อน แต่ย้อนกลับไปในอดีต จะพบหลักฐานทางโบราณคดีที่บ่งชี้ว่า ‘พวงหรีด’ เป็นสัญลักษณ์ที่ถูกใช้เริ่มแรกตั้งแต่สมัยอีทรัสคัน ลากยาวมาจนถึงสมัยกรีก-โรมัน โดยพวงหรีดที่ผู้คนน่าจะเคยเห็นผ่านตากันมาบ้าง ก็คือพวงหรีดที่สวมอยู่บนศีรษะของ ‘จูเลียส ซีซาร์’ แม่ทัพแห่งจักรพรรดิโรมันที่สวมพวงหรีดไว้เป็นเครื่องประดับศรีษะ และช่วยแสดงสถานะของพระองค์ได้ โดยมายาคติเรื่องการนำพวงหรีดมาใช้งานนั้นเกิดจากตำนานของเทพปกรณัมกรีก โดยเรื่องราวเริ่มต้นขึ้น เมื่อ ‘เทพเจ้าอพอลโล่’ ไปตกหลุมรักกับนางไม้ตนหนึ่งที่ชื่อว่า ‘แดฟเน่’ แต่ทว่า แดฟเน่ไม่ได้มีความชื่นชอบในตัวพระองค์แม้แต่น้อย เธอจึงหนีไปขอความช่วยเหลือกับ ‘พีนีโอส’ พ่อของตนเองพีนีโอสเลยทำการเปลี่ยนแดฟเน่ให้เป็นต้นไม้ใบเขียวแทนร่างเดิมด้านเทพเจ้าอพอลโล่เศร้าโศกเสียใจเป็นอย่างมากที่เห็นหญิงคนรักของตนกลายร่างไปเป็นต้นไม้ จึงทำได้เพียงแค่นำใบไม้มาทำเป็นมงกุฎสวมศีรษะตนเองเท่านั้น เมื่อพวงหรีดกลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์คู่กับเทพเจ้าอพอลโล่แบบนั้นแล้ว พวงหรีดก็เลยกลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของสถานะ ความสำเร็จและชัยชนะที่ติดตัวพระองค์ไปด้วยโดยปริยาย ซึ่งนี่จึงกลายเป็นความหมายที่พวงหรีดถูกนำมาใช้ในสมัยของจักรพรรดิจูเลียส ซีซาร์ด้วยนั่นเอง หลังจากนั้นพวงหรีดก็ถูกนำมาใช้โดยชาวคริสเตียนที่นำมาเฉลิมฉลองการประสูติของพระเยซูในวันคริสต์มาส ซึ่งนี่น่าจะเป็นพวงหรีดที่ทุกคนคุ้นตากันดีที่สุดและอยู่ใกล้ตัวมากกว่าที่เราคิด

หลายคนน่าจะตั้งคำถามในใจแล้วว่า ในเมื่อพวงหรีดเป็นการแสดงออกถึงความรู้สึกเชิงบวก แต่ทำไมจู่ๆ ถึงถูกส่งผ่านวัฒนธรรมมาเป็นการมอบให้ในงานไว้ทุกข์แทน ตามความเป็นจริงแล้ว พวงหรีดดั้งเดิม ก็ถูกใช้ในงานศพมาตั้งแต่สมัยกรีกเช่นกันโดยมีหลักฐานเป็นภาพงานศพของชายคนหนึ่งในยุควิกตอเรียน ที่ประเทศอังกฤษ โดยมีการประดับประดาและจัดพิธีในลักษณะที่คล้ายคลึงกับงานศพของไทยในปัจจุบันมากเหตุผลที่เป็นแบบนี้ เพราะว่าในสมัยวิกตอเรียนนั้นพวงหรีดถูกใช้เป็นสัญลักษณ์เกี่ยวกับความตาย และงานศพอย่างชัดเจน เช่น ในกรณีที่บ้านของคุณมีผู้เสียชีวิตก็จะต้องนำพวงหรีดผูกริบบิ้นมาแขวนประดับไว้ที่ประตูหน้าบ้าน เพื่อบอกให้คนอื่นที่ผ่านไปผ่านมาทราบว่า บ้านหลังนี้เพิ่งมีผู้เสียชีวิตและพวงหรีดก็ถูกนำมาแขวน หรือวางไว้บริเวณใกล้โลงศพ เพื่อแสดงออกถึงการจากไปของผู้ล่วงลับเช่นเดียวกัน ผู้คนในยุคนั้น มีคติว่าพวงหรีดเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของชีวิต และการกำเนิดใหม่ โดยยังเชื่อกันว่า หากผู้เสียชีวิต ได้กระทำความดีในตอนที่ยังมีชีวิตอยู่ ดอกไม้ในงานศพก็จะเบ่งบานสวยงาม แต่หากผู้เสียชีวิต ประพฤติตัวไม่เหมาะสมก็จะมีวัชพืชขึ้นตามพวงหรีดดอกไม้นี้แทน สืบทอดมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้ ที่งานศพของชาวตะวันตก ก็ยังนิยมใช้พวงหรีดวางหรือแขวนไว้บริเวณงานอยู่ตลอด โดยเฉพาะกรณีที่ผู้นำประเทศต้องการเข้าร่วมพิธีรำลึกของทหารที่เสียชีวิตในสงคราม ก็จะมีการวางพวงหรีดไว้หน้าอนุสรณ์เพื่อเป็นการให้เกียรติแก่ทหารผู้ล่วงลับเช่นกัน ซึ่งปัจจุบัน ก็ถือว่าพวงหรีดเป็นสัญลักษณ์งานศพแบบสากลไปแล้ว เพราะเราสามารถเห็นพวงหรีดได้ในงานศพจากนานาประเทศทั่วโลก แม้กระทั่งเพื่อนบ้านในเอเชียอย่างเกาหลีใต้ หรือญี่ปุ่น ก็มีการวางพวงหรีดไว้บริเวณงานศพเช่นกัน

การแผ่ขยายอิทธิพลของวัฒนธรรม ‘พวงหรีด’ เริ่มเข้ามาในประเทศไทยช่วงสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 ซึ่งเป็นช่วงเวลาเดียวกันกับที่ประเทศไทยรับวัฒนธรรมตะวันตกเข้ามาหลายด้าน โดยหลักฐานบ่งชี้ว่าการใช้พวงหรีดแรกเริ่มในไทยนั้น คือที่พิธีศพของเจ้าจอมมารดาเปี่ยม พระสนมเอกในรัชกาลที่ 4 โดย ณ เวลานั้น พวงหรีดยังเป็นสิ่งที่ใช้เฉพาะในงานศพของชนชั้นสูง แต่ในเวลาต่อมาพวงหรีดก็เริ่มแพร่หลายมากขึ้นในหมู่บุคคลทั่วไป จนกลายเป็นเรื่องปกติที่ปฏิบัติกันเป็นธรรมเนียมสืบต่อกันมา

เราได้รู้แล้วว่า จุดกำเนิดของพวงหรีดที่ได้รับความนิยมในสังคมไทยนั้นมาจากไหน แต่พวงหรีดที่ถูกใช้ในพิธีศพเพียงไม่กี่คืน ทำให้เกิดปัญหาอะไรตามมาบ้าง? ใน 1 วัน มีงานศพเกิดขึ้นกว่า 1,300 งานเท่ากับว่า ใน 1 ปี มีงานศพเกิดขึ้น มากกว่า 400,000 งาน ยิ่งกับงานศพที่จัดมากกว่า 1 วัน และผู้ที่มาเยี่ยมเยียนงานศพมีพวงหรีดติดมือมากกว่า 1 กลุ่ม หมายความว่า ใน 1 ปี เราใช้พวงหรีดในพิธีศพกันไปมากกว่า 1,000,000 พวงเลยทีเดียว ซึ่งปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้น ก็คือ พวงหรีดในทุกวันนี้ มีวัสดุสังเคราะห์ซ่อนอยู่ โดยการรักษาดอกไม้ให้สดสวยอยู่ตลอดเวลา ต้องใช้ถุงพลาสติกมาหุ้มห่อเอาไว้และบริเวณแกนพวงหรีดก็ยังต้องใช้โฟมเขียวที่อุ้มน้ำเพื่อรักษาความชุ่มชื้นให้กับดอกไม้จนกว่าจะใช้งานเสร็จเรียบร้อย แต่สุดท้าย… พวงหรีดเหล่านี้ ก็จะตกเป็นภาระของวัดที่ต้องนำไปทิ้งอยู่ดี เกิดเป็นห่วงโซ่ของปัญหาการกำจัดขยะและการดูแลสิ่งแวดล้อมที่หมุนเวียนไปไม่รู้จบ การแก้ปัญหาในวงจรนี้ มีบางคนได้นำพัดลมหรือต้นไม้ทั้งต้นมาใช้เป็นสัญลักษณ์มอบให้แทนพวงหรีด ด้วยความคิดที่ว่าหากใช้งานในพิธีศพเสร็จแล้ว อย่างน้อยวัดก็จะได้นำไปใช้งานต่อ ซึ่งท้ายที่สุดวัดก็ต้องนำไปบริจาค หรือทิ้งสิ่งของเหล่านั้นอยู่ดี เพราะวัดไม่สามารถรองรับปริมาณของชิ้นใหญ่แบบนี้ในระยะยาวได้ เนื่องจากมีพื้นที่จำกัด จากปัญหาทั้งหมดที่เกิดขึ้นก็จะกลายเป็นตัวอย่างของปัญหาที่คล้ายคลึงกับเรื่องการกำจัดขยะสิ่งแวดล้อมที่เกิดขึ้นในเทศกาลลอยกระทง และก็ยังคงเป็นปัญหาเรื้อรังมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้

ซึ่งกระบวนการประดิษฐ์พวงหรีด เราให้คนในชุมชนเป็นผู้ผลิตและส่งมอบบุญผ่านพวงหรีดทำมือ ถือเป็นการช่วยสร้างอาชีพให้กับผู้คนในท้องถิ่นได้อย่างต่อเนื่อง บางคนอาจเกิดคำถามเล็ก ๆ ว่า… แล้วพวงหรีดทั่วไปไม่ได้สร้างรายได้ให้กับเกษตรกรที่ปลูกดอกไม้หรือ? แต่ความเป็นจริงแล้วดอกไม้ที่นิยมนำมาใช้ทำพวงหรีดทั่วไปนั้น ส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นดอกไม้นำเข้าและแทบไม่ได้ปลูกในประเทศไทยเลย เพื่อเป็นการสานต่อบุญ Carenation ยังมอบเงินบริจาคส่วนหนึ่งที่ได้รับจากพวงหรีดให้กับองค์กรการกุศลที่ผู้ซื้อเลือกเอาไว้ เช่น คณะแพทย์ศาสตร์ จุฬาฯ, มูลนิธิรามาธิบดีฯ, องค์การทุนเพื่อเด็กแห่งสหประชาชาติ (UNICEF) หรือ มูลนิธิกระจกเงา เป็นต้น ซึ่งจนถึงขณะนี้ Carenation ได้บริจาคเงินไปแล้วมากกว่า 4 ล้านบาท โดยเรามีใบเสร็จยืนยันการบริจาคให้ทุกครั้งและยังสามารถนำใบเสร็จไปลดหย่อนภาษีได้อีกด้วย
