ศูนย์วิจัยช้างและสัตว์ป่า เป็นโครงการดำเนินงานภายใต้คณะสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2553 โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ ให้บริการด้านวิชาการเกี่ยวกับช้าง การดูแลสุขภาพช้าง เพื่อให้เกิดสวัสดิภาพที่ดี ทั้งช้างเลี้ยงเพื่อการท่องเที่ยวและช้างป่าในธรรมชาติ ควบคู่กับการสร้างองค์ความรู้ใหม่ผ่านทางงานวิจัย ตีพิมพ์ผลงานทางวิชาการ และเผยแพร่ต่อสาธารณะเพื่อให้เกิดความรู้และข้อเท็จจริงทางวิทยาศาสตร์และสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ด้านช้าง วัตถุประสงค์อีกอย่างคือการเผยแพร่ความรู้ผ่านทางการฝึกอบรมทั้งในระดับ นักเรียน นักศึกษา ควาญช้าง ผู้ช่วยสัตวแพทย์ และ สัตวแพทย์ ทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ

ในการออกให้บริการด้านวิชาการและดูแลสุขภาพช้างนั้น ถือเป็นหนึ่งในหน้าที่หลักของศูนย์วิจัยช้างและสัตว์ป่า เพื่อให้เกิดการดูแลช้างให้เกิดภาวะสุขภาพที่ดีตามธรรมชาติ รวมไปถึงเพื่อให้เกิดสวัสดิภาพที่ดีต่อช้าง ผ่านการออกรักษาช้างตามปางช้าง และชุมชนผู้เลี้ยงช้างในพื้นที่จังหวัดเชียงใหม่และจังหวัดใกล้เคียงในเขตภาคเหนือ โดยนายสัตวแพทย์ประจำศูนย์วิจัยช้างและสัตว์ป่า จะออกเดินทางไปด้วยรถคลินิกเคลื่อนที่ เพื่อเข้าไปรักษาอาการเจ็บป่วยของช้างเมื่อมีการร้องขอจากเหตุฉุกเฉิน รวมไปถึงออกให้คำปรึกษาด้านสุขภาพแก่เจ้าของช้าง
