ปัจจุบันประเทศไทยมีผู้สูญเสียดวงตาหรือมีตาฝ่อ คาดการณ์ไว้อยู่ที่ประมาณหลายหมื่นราย ในการรักษาโรคทางตา จุดมุ่งหมายที่สำคัญที่สุดคือ การทำให้ผู้ป่วยกลับมามองเห็นได้อย่างปกติ แต่ในบางครั้งก็ไม่สามารถทำได้ บางรายอาจต้องถูกผ่าตัดนำลูกตาออก หรืออาจเกิดภาวะลูกตาฝ่อซึ่งสาเหตุของการสูญเสียดวงตานั้นมีหลากหลาย เช่น อุบัติเหตุ การติดเชื้อหรือการอักเสบในลูกตา หรือมะเร็งในลูกตา ส่งผลให้ผู้ป่วยเหล่านี้มีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ด้อยกว่า และมีความรู้สึกตึงเครียดสูงกว่าประชากรทั่วไปอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ ด้วยเหตุนี้สาขาวิชาศัลยกรรมกระดูกเบ้าตาและตกแต่ง ภาควิชาจักษุวิทยา คณะแพทยศาสตร์ศิริราชพยาบาล มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล จึงได้จัดตั้งศูนย์บริการตาเทียมขึ้นในโรงพยาบาลศิริราชมาตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2557 เพื่อผลิตตาเทียมที่มีรูปลักษณ์ใกล้เคียงตาปกติมากที่สุด ซึ่งแม้จะไม่ได้ทำให้กลับมามองเห็น แต่สามารถลดผลกระทบทางด้านจิตใจ และยังทำให้ผู้ที่สูญเสียดวงตาสามารถใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในสังคมได้อย่างมั่นใจ และมีความสุข ปัจจุบันผู้ป่วยที่ไม่มีสิทธิ์การรักษาแบบเบิกจ่ายตรง(ข้าราชการ)จะต้องเสียค่าใช้จ่ายในการทำตาเทียมเฉพาะบุคคล 5,000 บาทต่อดวง ทำให้ผู้ป่วยที่ขาดแคลนทุนทรัพย์หลายคนขาดโอกาสที่จะได้ใส่ตาเทียมเฉพาะบุคคล

เป้าหมายของกองทุนตาเทียม

ทางภาควิชาจักษุวิทยาจึงร่วมมือกับศิริราชมูลนิธิจัดตั้งกองทุนตาเทียมขึ้นมาเพื่อที่จะได้พัฒนาการบริการของศูนย์บริการตาเทียมและเปิดโอกาสให้ผู้ป่วยที่สูญเสียดวงตาหรือตาฝ่อแต่ขาดแคลนทุนทรัพย์ และไม่มีสิทธิ์การรักษาที่ครอบคลุม สามารถเข้ารับบริการทำตาเทียมเฉพาะบุคคลที่ศูนย์บริการโดยไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่าย
