ปัจจุบันผู้ป่วยโรคมะเร็งมีจํานวนมากขึ้น ผู้ป่วยส่วนใหญ่จะได้รับการรักษาด้วยยาเคมีบําบัดซึ่งเป็นยาที่ไปทําลายการเจริญเติบโตของเซลล์มะเร็งรวมไปถึงเซลล์ปกติของร่างกายด้วย

ได้มีการคิดค้นยาใหม่เพื่อใช้รักษาโรคมะเร็ง ซึ่งยาจะออกฤทธิ์เจาะจงต่อเซลล์มะเร็งมากยิ่งขึ้น ยากลุ่มนี้เรียกว่ายามุ่งเป้า(Targeted therapy) โดยอาจส่งผลต่อเซลล์ปกติเพียงเล็กน้อย ต่างจากยาเคมีบำบัด ยามุ่งเป้ารักษามะเร็งได้หลายชนิดทั้งในระยะเริ่มต้นและระยะแพร่กระจาย เมื่อให้ร่วมกับเคมีบําบัด อาจเปลี่ยนระยะของโรคจากระยะสุดท้ายกลับมาเป็นระยะที่สามารถผ่าตัดให้หายขาดได้ ยาใหม่อีกกลุ่มหนึ่งได้แก่ยาภูมิคุ้มกันบำบัด ซึ่งมีกลไกเข้าไปปรับสมดุลของระบบภูมิคุ้มกันของร่างกายให้มีความสามารถในการจัดการกำจัดเซลล์แปลกปลอมในร่างกายได้ดีขึ้น ช่วยให้การตอบสนองต่อการรักษาได้นานกว่ายาเคมีบำบัด

เงินบริจาคจะนำไปสมทบทุนค่ายามุ่งเป้าและยาภูมิคุ้มกันบำบัดให้กับผู้ป่วยมะเร็งที่เข้าเกณฑ์ได้ผลดีจากการรักษาด้วยยากลุ่มนี้ แต่ขาดทุนทรัพย์และไม่สามารถเบิกค่ายาได้
